| | Most of the mangroves, wildlife and beaches in Ream National Park have been beautifully maintained and kept pristine, thanks to a dedicated force of 35 rangers. One of seven national parks established in 1993, the park’s 200 fishermen have not been evicted but allowed to stay to continue their subsistence fishing. To maintain the ecosystem in balance, no new residents are allowed. | |

| Wildlife in Ream Made of 150 sq km of land and 60sq km hectares of marine habitat, the park has miles of untouched beaches, mangrove swamps and evergreen forests, all of which are home to nearly 200 species of birds including endangered birds of prey such as the grey-headed eagle, the sea-eagle and milky stork and the painted stork. Other wildlife include king cobras, pythons, monkeys, leopard cat, silver langur and different types of marine life. | | | Jungle Treks The rangers organize various interesting trekking or boating trips. Trekking with a ranger is a reasonable US$2 per hour per person and proceeds go to preserve the park. Jungle walks include a 2 hour trip to meditation Mountain, a pace of worship for the Cambodians or a 2-3 hour hike to Toul Creek. | | | Dolphin Watching
An excellent option is a ranger-led boat trip down the mangrove-lined Prek Toeuk River. This river is salty in the dry season when the sea water flows inland and is filled with freshwater during the rainy season. Monkeys, dolphins, lot of birds can be spotted and snorkeling equipment is available for rental. The going rate is US$45 for five or les and US$9 each passenger for 6 or more people. The ranger is an extra US$5.00.
The best months for dolphin watching are from November to March. Overnight camping trips are permitted, although it is necessary to bring sufficient water and food. The park has a few basic guesthouses for US$5.00 a night. Ream is 18km from Sihanoukville and a return trip by moto is between US$5-US$10 or US$25 for a private taxi for the day. | |
