Kien Svay, Kandal

PDF Print E-mail

Kien Svay of Kandal province is a popular picnic area just 15km east of Phnom Penh. Several hundred open bamboo huts have been built over the Mekong and space is rented for picnicking and eating. It is best to negotiate the price, which should cover the boat trip to the huts, before hand and it should not be more than 5000 riel (US$1.25) per hour to rent the space.

Some spaces are let with food included. However, there have been complaints that some less scrupulous owners end up overcharging for the food. It might be best to avoid the hassles by buying food from the streetcarts.

Cambodian delicacies on pushcarts

The narrow streets of Kien Svay are crowded with stalls and pushcarts selling all sorts of food. Popular dishes are grilled chicken, fish, river lobster and tropical fruits but exotic Cambodian delicacies such as fried spiders, silkworms, barbequed birds or toasted turtles are easily found.

Should you run out of food in your rented hut, it is not necessary to catch the tiny boat back to land. Wooden sampans sail up and down the river, equipped with a charcoal stove and barbeque pit, to replenish servings of lobster, fish and other seafood.

Getting to Kien Svay

Jet ski rentals are available and boat rides can be had for around 7,000 riel (US$1.75) per hour. Svay is pretty crowded on weekends when there are hundreds of picnickers.. Some of the salespeople can be pretty aggressive in their attempts to drum business for their huts. A weekday picnic is a better idea as the place is rather deserted then.

There are regular buses from Phnom Penh to Kien Svay for around 2000 riel (US$0.50) or a moto round trip should cost approximately US$5.00
